Ski resorts across China, for the trip you can actually take

Chongli is still the straightforward add-on from Beijing. The other names overseas skiers ask about — Yabuli, Changbai Mountain, Beidahu, Lake Songhua, and Altay’s four (Jiangjunshan, Koktokay, Hemu–Jikebulin, Qinggeli Langshan) — are real destination trips. They fit a tourist visa. They are a poor fit for a short transit-without-visa stay, and Jilin is outside typical TWOV stay regions. Xinjiang is not a TWOV region in our notes. We do not print a policy table. Confirm entry on China Transit Guide and with NIA / 12367, and confirm snow with the resort. Page updated 2026-11-01.

Place What the trip feels like Entry note in our pages
Chongli cluster 3–5 days from Beijing. One resort base. Train to Taizicheng. The practical short-stay hub, including for many TWOV readers. Verify.
Beijing Nanshan A lesson or a night session on a city-edge hill. Inside Beijing. Less mountain than Chongli.
Yabuli A Harbin add-on. Half a day to reach the hill. Several ski zones. Tourist visa. A Harbin-only transit note may not cover Shangzhi — verify before you rely on TWOV.
Changbai Mountain Its own flight and a resort village. Park visit is separate. Tourist visa. Jilin is outside typical TWOV stay regions. Not an Ikon mountain.
Beidahu & Lake Songhua Jilin City area. Ikon for 26/27. Pick one base. Tourist visa: a normal plan. TWOV: do not. Days are per resort.
Altay’s four resorts A week in northern Xinjiang. City hill, Fuyun, Hemu, or Qinghe — pick one base. Tourist visa. Xinjiang is not a TWOV region in our notes.

Beijing & Hebei

The short trip

If you have four or five days and a Beijing arrival, start here. Full Chongli comparison sits on its own page.

Hebei · Zhangjiakou

Chongli cluster

Four names cover almost every short ski trip from Beijing: Wanlong (万龙) for skiers who want steeper laps, Yunding (云顶, also Genting Secret Garden / 密苑) for mixed groups and Ikon Pass holders, Thaiwoo (太舞) for a self-contained village, and Fulong (富龙) for beginners, kids, and night skiing closer to town.

Ride high-speed rail from Beijing North or Qinghe to Taizicheng, often about 1–1.5 hours, then a shuttle. Stay at the resort you will ski. Switching bases mid-trip spends the day in a van.

Our notes commonly frame Hebei / Chongli as workable beside a Beijing hub on a TWOV stay. That is not a ruling — re-check the region list. Compare the four · Ikon at Yunding

Nanshan

Nanshan (南山) is the hill Beijingers mean when they say they skied “in the city.” It works for a first lesson, a rental day, or a night session. The vertical and the variety are not in Chongli’s league. Weekends and holidays are crowded, English is limited, and a hazy weekday will not look like this sunset.

The drive north of central Beijing is long enough that traffic can eat a day trip. Confirm the day’s road time and whether night skiing is actually open. Useful when you cannot spare two nights in Chongli. A weak choice if the group already skis and wants a mountain.

The northeast

Harbin and Jilin, on a tourist visa

These are destination resorts. Budget the travel day. Do not staple them onto a 72-hour Beijing stay.

Yabuli

Yabuli (亚布力), in Shangzhi, Heilongjiang, is the old name overseas skiers know: a large resort area that hosted early international races and still anchors a Harbin ski trip. The aerial is the promotional frame on the Yabuli Sunshine Resort site. Other villages in the zone (Sun Mountain, Windmill, and newer names) are separate bookings. Book the gate you mean.

Treat the Harbin transfer as half a day. Winter weather adds time — confirm coach, train, or a driver for your dates. Harbin’s ice festival often overlaps mid-winter; the dates move if you want both.

Our TWOV notes often point at Harbin city only. Yabuli is outside the city. Treat it as a tourist-visa trip unless 12367 confirms your exact stay. It is not on Ikon.

Changbai Mountain

The volcano in the photo is why people fly here. The skiing is not on the crater. It happens at resort villages on the approach. The name most overseas readers book is Wanda Changbai Mountain (万达长白山). Brands on booking sites change — match the map pin. This is not an Ikon resort, and it is not the same base as Beidahu or Lake Songhua near Jilin City. Do not plan them as one hotel.

Many visitors fly to Changbaishan Airport (NBS) or a nearby regional field and take a resort transfer. Confirm which airport the hotel actually meets. A Heaven Lake visit is a separate ticket, with weather closures and winter limits. Assume nothing about the park just because the ski hotel is open.

Tourist visa: a normal, if remote, ski trip. TWOV readers: Jilin sits outside the stay regions our notes treat as typical. Do not build a transit itinerary here.

Tourist visa yes · TWOV no

Beidahu and Lake Songhua

Both are on the Ikon Pass for winter 26/27, and both sit in the Jilin City orbit — the foothills of the Changbai range, a different drive from the volcano resort above. Beidahu (北大湖) is the bigger mountain day: Ikon’s page describes a long season, night skiing, and a large vertical. Lake Songhua (松花湖) is the easier pairing with the city. Ikon puts it about 15 km / 9 miles from downtown Jilin and lists night skiing.

Ikon listed Changchun Longjia (CGQ) at about 78 miles from Beidahu and about 53 miles from Lake Songhua (pass pages, 2026-11-01). Confirm the transfer you will actually ride. Pick one base. Days are per destination: Pass 7, Base 5, Session no access. They do not pool.

On a tourist visa this is a straightforward northeast ski trip. For TWOV readers the caution stays: Jilin is outside typical TWOV stay regions. A pass does not move the border of a stay area. Check-in differs, too — Direct-to-Lift at Yunding and Beidahu, Window Check-In at Lake Songhua, on the pages we re-read 2026-11-01. Full Ikon notes.

Xinjiang

Four Altay resorts, on a tourist visa

Northern Xinjiang is its own week, usually via Urumqi into Altay (AAT) or onward toward Fuyun. Xinjiang is not a TWOV region in our notes. These four are the names people mean. Pick one base. Confirm snow, the road, and which lifts are spinning. We do not list ticket prices.

Easiest city base

Jiangjunshan

Jiangjunshan (将军山国际滑雪度假区, General’s Mountain) is the hill directly above Altay city. It is the base to choose when you want skiing without a canyon drive. Night skiing happens when the resort has the lights on — that is seasonal. The photo is the night hill over town, kept because it still shows the “ski above the city” idea more clearly than an opening-ceremony still.

Fuyun · geopark

Koktokay / Keketuohai

Koktokay (可可托海国际滑雪度假区, also spelled Keketuohai) is in Fuyun County, in the Koktokay geopark country. The scenic committee’s site is keketuohaigeopark.com. It is a different drive from the city hill: canyon weather and which runs are open decide the day.

Xinhua, 21 October 2026, reported the 2026–27 season opening on 20 October, with Koktokay Avenue between 3,100 m and 2,500 m open that day, and described a vertical of about 1,350 m. That is one news report. Confirm the week you travel.

Hemu / Kanas · powder focus

Hemu / Jikebulin / Jikepulin

Hemu–Jikebulin (禾木·吉克普林国际滑雪度假区, also Jikepulin) sits near Hemu village in Burqin County, on the Kanas side of Altay. It is the big-vertical, powder-focused resort of the four, and the least convenient: winter roads, village lodging, and lift queues all move. There is no polished English website to rely on. Day-to-day news is mostly the resort’s WeChat account. Altay News, 11 November 2025, quoting the operating company, described a vertical of about 1,466 m. A culture-and-tourism repost of the resort’s own guide has listed 400-004-5800 for service and rescue — confirm the number still answers. We are not publishing a day-by-day, and we do not have a cleared still of the mountain on this page.

Qinghe County

Langshan / Qinggeli Wolf Mountain

Qinggeli Langshan (青格里狼山国际滑雪场, also 狼山 / Wolf Mountain) is in Qinghe County. Altay News, 20 November 2024, put it about 12 km from the county town, beside the wolf reserve. It is the newer, smaller hill of the four. Do not plan it as a same-day add-on to Hemu.

What these notes will not do We do not rank a single “best resort in China,” quote lift-ticket prices, or promise powder. Figures above that come from Ikon are labeled and dated. Everything else is orientation. The resort’s own channel, the week you travel, wins.
